The success of John Gray’s book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus was, in great part, due to the fact that Gray recognized misunderstandings between the two genders as being essentially cultural. Once the male understands the female culture and vice-versa, and each develops intercultural skills, communication can flow and the relationships can blossom.
In cross-cultural couples and families the approach is similar. The impact of culture, in addition to the gender and generational components —and the meaning of marital and parent-children relationships in the respective cultures— is usually at the root of most misunderstandings.
